Color: BlackVerified Purchase
This is the current "go to" machine for netbooks.I bought it to do email and browsing while on the road and it does that just fine.
There are a few things to be aware of. 1. The memory Amazon recommends is wrong. Don't buy it. Buy the
Patriot Signature 2 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 1333MHz Notebook Memory PSD32G13332S that someone recommended in one of the other reviews. 2. Many users have complained that the memory upgrade still doesn't work with the latest BIOS. The ASUS Eee LiveUpdate application that shows when you start Windows does NOT search for BIOS updates. You need to go to the Start menu / ASUS / ASUSUpdate for Eee PC / ASUSUpdate, which shows build 0801. You need to go to the ASUS support site at [...] search for the 1015PEM, and then download (at least) version 0904. You can then use the ASUS Update utility to update the BIOS by choosing "Update from file."In theory you are supposed to be able to update the computer by copying the file to a USB thumb drive, but I couldn't make that work, even after trying three different thumb drives. 3. Current 1015PEM machines in the USA are shipping with Fast Ethernet, not Gigabit Ethernet. (100Mbps vs. 1000Mbps.)The new 1015PED I saw last week for $40 less contained the GigE chip, so this is really irritating. 4. The 802.11n implementation is relatively slow.My access point is 10 feet from the computer and the best I can get is 74Mbps. The access point is rated for 135 to 300Mbps, depending on the technology in the client hardware. 5. The two USB ports on the right of my machine are USB 3. Like the wired ethernet chip, this seems to change on a routine basis. Your mileage may vary. 6. The Windows Experience Index of the computer is 3.0. The hard drive is actually the fastest component in the system, with an Experience Index of 5.9. 7. I installed Windows 7 SP1 on this system with no difficulty. It took 55 minutes to install. 8. The hard drive has two partitions, Drive C and Drive D. If you run out of space on Drive C, look at Drive D. 9. Windows 7 Starter is nowhere near as bad as other posters seem to think. All of those fancy features in the upgraded editions use more CPU time and more memory. Netbooks don't have much of either, so I say good riddance. You give up desktop visual effects, drive encryption, and some enterprise features like domains. See [...] 10. The 1015 series uses obnoxiously bright blue LEDs. In low light, the "power" light in particular is glaring. 11. Replacing the hard drive with an SSD is complicated and voids the warranty. You can't just slide out the hard drive like most laptops.
I purchased this for my wife, so she could have a light, compact computer to take to school (college), and travel with. She hates to carry a big, heavy one with her. I've been with her on flights and the heavy laptops get old for me too. As far as what we wanted, a small, light laptop that will work for the internet, email, and she can access her college web site and submit/work on homework with, this is perfect. I bought this and ordered the 2GB of RAM from Crucial at the same time. The RAM was easy to install but I did follow the printed instruction about adjusting the setting in the ASUS BIOS before I made the change. The RAM was recognized with no problem. I also did what others did and removed some "extra" software but that was no problem either. I installed the full Office Suite so my wife can use Word and Powerpoint. I also downloaded and installed Panda Cloud Anti-virus and Skype. Neither seemed to have affected the performance. Obviously this netbook is NOT as fast as a full laptop, but for the price and the fact that you can carry it like a magazine it's plenty fast. I have used the web cam and its fine. Not HD and stuff like that but it works fine. I also purchased the Logitech wireless mouse and it works seamless as well. I don't know what else to say. I would recommend this IF you are looking for what we were looking for. If you think its going to be a blazing, lightning fast laptop; well, it's not. Its exactly what its described as. I like the keyboard, the design and oh yeah, one more thing. This ASUS has a special button called "Express Gate" that basically bypasses alot of the WIndows crap and starts up really quickly just get you to Explorer when you only want to use the internet. Which is quite often. Thats is a great feature....Hope this helps.....
I really wish I could give this nice little Netbook a glowing report.Boy do I, considering how I got sucked in by all of the rave reviews.(See update below)
For me to love this device it would HAVE to have an easy to use touchpad.Sadly, it has issues.Yes, it's got all kinds of settings and etc, all but the one it really needs.
Here's the story.I got this unit a few days back and started to try to use it.I'm ok with the smaller than full-size keyboard, I can learn to live with the lilliputian shift key on the right, but what I found frustrating like crazy was the constant unwanted "selecting" coming from inadvertent contact with the touchpad. The genius who designed this made the active region of the touchpad (for click purposes) extend to immediately below and adjacent to the space bar. Thus, whenever you hit the spacebar guess what? You've clicked the mouse.Drove me crazy until I hooked up my Bluetooth mouse and turned off the touchpad altogether.Forget about the "palm" setting, it doesn't work. The only setting I could find that solves it (if you're determined to use the touchpad) is to disable ALL clicking on the pad, and instead use the metal button bar below the pad.Kind of a pain, but I *guess* I could learn to adapt if forced to.
So, if you're planning on buying this unit, do yourself a favor and order a "Genius" or other BlueTooth mini-mouse, and then you'll be OK.Other than that be prepared for LOTS of frustration as web pages mysteriously change because someone (you) clicked on a link when you didn't mean to.
2-11-2011 Update, getting better all the time
I am pleased to report that other than the above gripe (still true) I am enjoying this little machine quite a bit.So much so that I've raised it from two to three stars. It's stingy on the batteries (good), the display is bright and clear (really good), and it's so nicely light and portable (wonderful). Here's my suggestion -- UN-ENABLE TAPPING, use an external bluetooth mouse.Do both and life is good.Oh, on another note, can someone tell me why the 250G hard drive is partitioned into 100G, a 15G and a 118G partitions?Makes life a bit more complicated.
2-14-2011 Update, Hotkey Fn(...) problem and fix
Weird problem showed up, hopefully fixed. The "Special Function Keys" would intermittently stop working, a real pain when I wanted to attach an external monitor, change volume or use any of the other great features it provides.ASUS tech support guided me to update the firmware to version 904 (the machine had 801 in it).I also updated the hotkey driver/service files at the same time.I'll post another update if the problem reappears.Downloading the updates involved wending my way through the ASUS support web site, worth doing. There are updates for all sorts of things there.
2-17-2011 Further Hotkey update
Special Key problem NOT fixed. After all upgrades still having intermittent failure. The symptoms (when failed) is that most of the Fn(...) keys don't work, the only ones that do are the screen brightness and sleep keys. Also, the on-screen status window stops appearing.Waiting for response from ASUS tech support.
2-21-2011 Last post (unless something really interesting happens)
Asus tech support-- that's an oxymoron. The best advice they could give me was to re-image the hard drive and start over.If you've ever started up one of these little critters, you know that it takes a full day, sometimes more, to get it going with all the updates, bloatware removal and etc. There's no way I'm going through that again.
I had shopped around for awhile before making this purchase and several reviewers had glowing reports for ASUS netbooks, even over Toshiba and HP. Because I am an author, the keyboard layout and keystroke action were the most important considerations to me. The keys on this are easy to find, well shaped, and very responsive. The battery life, while nowhere near the advertised 11 hours is still great at 7-8 hours, making this netbook ideal for typing away from a power source (on a plane, in a car, etc.)
I also changed out the standard 1 GB RAM to 2, based on the suggestions of other reviewers. I ordered the extra memory at the same time as the netbook. I am no techie, but to replace it was a breeze. (very helpful step-by-step how-to video available on YouTube). This netbook feels a little heavier than I expected, but it's still very portable. Screen is very bright and it boots up quickly. I bought the neoprene sleeve to store it in, and the sleeve is very light in weight but also stretchy enough that I can include the power cord and pens, paper, etc.
One huge annoyance, however, that I did not think about before purchasing a netbook, is that I cannot turn the finger pad off (I use a wireless mouse with it) and this, for typing, is maddening, as an accidental touch of my wrist/finger on it will send the curser sailing all over the page, inserting words where I don't want them to be! If anyone knows the secret to disabling the fingerpad feature, please post it.
While I'm still putting the 1015PEM through its paces I think it's a great little machine. I did upgrade to 2 GB RAM as soon as I got it so that helps. My big issue is that it doesn't boot up about 3 times out of 5 and when it eventually does goes through a safe mode start up. Takes a few minutes and is very annoying. This one may be going back by return mail.
Could almost say like new! Used a couple months until upgraded to full size laptop. Comes with padded carrying case, charger, CDs/manuals and of course the PC. Recently tested, USB ports, touchpad, wireless, charger, all in excellent working order. Win XP. No dead battery! Never needed to change the time, has always kept the time great. Ready to go, will ship fast--priority!
By our suggestions above, we hope that you can found Acer Eee Pc for you. Please don't forget to share your experience by comment in this post. Thank you!
